It was the summer before my senior year of high school, and the annual town fair was in full swing. The air was thick with the smell of cotton candy and popcorn, and the cheerful screams from the roller coaster filled the night. My best friend, Leo, and I were wandering through the crowded lanes, our pockets jingling with a few precious coins. We had just enough for one ride each.

“The Ferris wheel or the bumper cars?” Leo asked, his eyes sparkling under the neon lights.

Before I could answer, a frantic voice cut through the noise. “Has anyone seen a little girl? She’s about five, wearing a yellow dress with sunflowers!” A woman, her face pale with panic, was pushing through the crowd, her eyes searching desperately.

Leo and I exchanged a glance. Without a word, we abandoned our ride plans. “We’ll help you look,” I said to the woman, who introduced herself as Mrs. Evans. Her daughter, Lily, had vanished just minutes ago near the ring-toss game.

We split up. Leo went towards the food stalls, while I headed to the quieter edge of the fairgrounds, near the old carousel. The music from the carousel was melancholic and slow. And there, sitting alone on a bench behind it, was a little girl in a yellow dress, clutching a half-melted ice cream cone and quietly crying.
