一、完形填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Do you know the story of the Chinese idiom “画蛇添足huà shé tiān zú” (Adding Feet to a Snake)? It tells us that doing something unnecessary can ruin a good thing. This is similar to some English idioms. For example, “Don’t cry over spilt milk” means it’s no use ___1___ about past mistakes. We should learn from them and move on.

Idioms are like spices in a language. They make our ___2___ more vivid and interesting. However, learning them can be a challenge for language learners. Sometimes, the meaning of an idiom is different from the ___3___ meanings of the individual words. Take “It’s raining cats and dogs” as an example. It simply means it’s raining very ___4___, not that animals are falling from the sky!

So, how can we learn idioms well? First, try to understand the story or culture ___5___ them. Many idioms come from history, fables, or daily life. Second, practice using them in the right situations. Using an idiom ___6___ might cause misunderstandings. Remember, “Practice makes perfect.” The more you read and use idioms, the more ___7___ you will become.

Finally, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Even native speakers sometimes use idioms in a wrong way. Learning a language is a journey full of discoveries. As the saying goes, “Every cloud has a silver ___8___.” There is always something hopeful in a difficult situation. Keep learning, and you will find that understanding idioms can open a new ___9___ to the culture and thinking of English speakers. It will make your communication much more ___10___ and effective.

Zhang Wei, a 15-year-old boy from a small village in Yunnan, has become an online star for his beautiful bamboo weaving (竹编) works. It all started three years ago when he found his grandfather’s old weaving tools in the attic. Out of curiosity, he asked his grandfather to teach him.

“At first, it was just for fun. My fingers were often cut by the sharp bamboo strips,” Zhang recalled. “But Grandpa said our craft has a history of over 1,000 years. I felt I should not let it disappear.”

He practiced every day after school. Slowly, his skills improved. He didn’t just make traditional baskets; he started weaving modern items like phone cases, lampshades, and even small sculptures of animals. His family encouraged him to share his works online. To his surprise, people loved them. Orders began to come from big cities, and even from other countries.

“The most exciting moment,” Zhang said with a smile, “was when a museum in Shanghai wanted to buy my ‘Panda Family’ sculpture for an exhibition. I never thought my hobby could go so far.”

Zhang now has a small online shop run with his cousin. He uses part of the money he earns to buy new tools and materials, and part to help his grandfather restore old weaving patterns. “I hope more young people can see the beauty in traditional crafts. They are not old-fashioned; they can be very cool and creative,” he said.

17. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as Zhang’s product?

A. Baskets.

B. Phone cases.

The Lifecycle of a Butterfly

The transformation of a butterfly is one of nature’s most amazing wonders. It goes through four main stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult.

It all starts when a female butterfly lays tiny eggs on a plant. After a few days, a small caterpillar hatches. This is the eating stage! The caterpillar eats almost constantly, growing very fast. It sheds its skin several times as it grows.

When it is fully grown, the caterpillar finds a safe place. It attaches itself and forms a chrysalis around its body. Inside this hard case, an incredible change happens. The caterpillar’s body breaks down into a kind of soup, and then reforms into a butterfly.

Finally, the adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. Its wings are wet and folded at first. It pumps blood into its wings to expand them. After a few hours, the wings are dry and strong, and the butterfly is ready to fly, find food, and start the cycle all over again.
